FES Products - Denervated Muscle, Complete System

RISE Stimulator

The RISE stimulator represents a breakthrough in the electrotherapy of both innervated and denervated muscle. The stimulation of denervated muscles can only be achieved by means of broad pulses that directly excite the muscle , and this can be achieved with the RISE.

The powerful 2-channel stimulation unit has eleven pre-programmed current forms which can be individually adjusted to suit the client. The touch screen, in combination with a well thought-out user interface, makes the selection and operation of the unit very simple.

With full training and a suggested programme of application provided to each client for optimum use, the RISE stimulator is offering increasing health benefits for those who may not be appropriate for conventional FES.

Key Features.

The Schuhfried stimulators and research backed current forms have been in use since 1947. They are the industry leaders in the stimulation of flaccidly paralysed, denervated muscles.

2 Channel Stimulation

Unilateral or bilateral stimulation can be achieved with 2 channels of stimulation. Large surface electrodes and sponges are used to cover and stimulate as much of the muscle as possible.

Simple, Safe Operation

The clean touchscreen design makes the device easy to handle, with operation as simple as selecting the programme from the menu. Therapists can password protect parameters for safe home use.

Impulse Test

You can check the degree of denervation, determine the optimum stimulation parameters, and track the progress of training programmes on the muscle with the per-programmed Impulse Test.

 A Brief History

In the 1990‘s, stimulating denervated muscle was seen as promising, but controversial by some. During the EU Project RISE, a team of scientists and physicians from Austria, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, Slovenia and Iceland, acquired essential insights into functional electrical stimulation (FES) of denervated muscles.

RISE demonstrated that home-based FES of denervated muscle is an effective therapy that results in the rescue of muscle mass and restoration of tetanic contractility - even after many years of denervation. The project, and the subsequent product development, are founded on more than 20 years research in Austria.

Benefits of Electrotherapy

After some years, much of the tissue of denervated muscle is replaced by fat and connective tissue and secondary problems such as decubitus ulcers, dysfunction of wound healing and osteoporosis can occur.

Such denervated muscle is incapable of excitation by normal FES (functional electrical stimulation) protocols. This unfortunately prevents some activities such as FES cycling or standing that can assist overall fitness and well being. This is where the RISE can help.

By using the RISE Stimulator, clients can achieve both direct and indirect benefits with consistent use.
This process will work if you use it. But its a marathon, not a sprint.

Regeneration of Muscle Structure

Over time denervation affects the nerves and structure of the muscle. By using a biphasic, ‘Twitch’ contraction training programme you can encourage the nerves and muscle structure to normalise.

Particularly where there is potential for re-innervation, the muscle remains capable of contracting.

Improve Strength & Visual Appearance

Our next goal is to strengthen and develop this muscle tissue. Using a biphasic ‘Tetanic’ training programme, we encourage a strong, sustained contraction of the muscles.

This will help to improve muscle bulk and tissue quality, reducing complications and improving the physical appearance.

Better Skin & Wound Healing

Increased activity in the muscles will improve the circulation of blood to the muscle & surrounding tissue. This in turn serves to improve the general condition of the skin, speed up wound healing and help prevent pressure sores.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Generally the RISE is suitable for those with

    • muscle weakness of innervated muscle

    • flaccid paralysis in denervated muscle

    • the treatment of both central or peripheral paralysis.

Most commonly this would be as a result of

    • Spinal Cord Injury

    • Brachial Plexus Injury

    • Peripheral nerve injuries

    • Implanted cardiac pacemaker or defibrillator

    • Metal implants under or near to the muscles being stimulated

    • Damaged skin or open wounds near stimulation

    • Epilepsy

    • Pregnancy

In all cases we look for clarification of any risk items before absolutely excluding a client from use.

  • Commitment to regular use is the most important factor for success - particularly in early days of application.

At the very start of your journey we would recommend using the system 5/6 days per week, for approx 20-30mins per muscle group.

After approx one year we hope to move into ‘maintenance’ where this could reduce to 3 days per week.

  • Its really important to us that you feel confident in setting up and making adjustments to your system. Electro-stimulation is often a lifelong commitment to maintain good health, so empowering you with knowledge is critical to get the most out of it!

With every system sale we include:

    • Setup Visit
We will usually programme and send your stimulator in advance before arranging a visit in your home. We will then spend circa min of 60 mins going though system operation, running programmes with you and explaining the training protocol.
We document the whole session so you can ask us for a reminder later or have any questions.
We’re happy to train or explain anything to family members or carers who may be assisting in future, and we can provide a competency sign off where necessary.

    • 6 Week Follow Up
After you’ve had some time to consistently use the system we’ll visit for a further training session. At this point you may have some questions you would like us to answer. In this session we will take you through making adjustments and how to advance your training programme.

  • Absolutely! You can also further your knowledge in the following ways:

    • By joining our exclusive Online Community which includes resources, webinars, message boards and training challenges & ideas

    • Video resources available online

    • Virtual Check-in / Refresher training

    • In-person refresher training

    • Sessions with our clinical partners

  • We do not offer the RISE to rent at the moment.

For many clients, stimulation is likely something you need to commit to for life in order to maintain good health, and rental would be impractical.

For those who may only require temporary or short term use of the stimulator we are currently looking at options to do this.

If you have a good demonstration visit then stimulation would be suitable to use, and we would always ask clients to think carefully about their commitment to using a system.

  • We don’t offer any financing options or payment plans at the moment. We understand this would make the system accessible to more individuals, so we are looking at the possibilities and hope to be able to offer something soon.

    • Dimensions in cm (l x w x h): 34 x 27 x 13 cm

    • Weight: 4.5 kg

  • Yes!
It is ‘chunky’ but portable. Many of our clients will travel with the system.
We recommend purchasing a sturdy protective case (like a Peli) and packing the system carefully with cut foam to ensure that it does not move when transported.

  • There is a 2 year warranty on the stimulator unit.
Consumables (electrodes, sponges, cables) will be subject to degradation and general wear & tear, and require replacement over time. Replacement time will depend on frequency of use, and the care and storage of the parts..

  • The electrode pads and cables will degrade and require replacement over time. We also know that accidents happen and parts can be broken. You can find the most common consumables, accessories and spare parts to purchase on our webstore (with VAT Relief).

RISE Assessment Process

1. Request A Demo / Complete the Risk Assessment
In order to organise a demo we ask you to complete a risk assessment. It gives us some basic information to make sure the device is safe and suitable for you to use.
Click the button below to complete!

2. We’ll Arrange a Demo
Using the details on your form we’ll ask one of our therapy partners to visit you for a demo of the device in your home, or if more convenient, a nearby clinical facility.

NB. Our Therapy Partners are not sales people. We contract them independently to assess your clinical suitability and make sure you are comfortable with all aspects of the device.

3. Personal Report & Quote
We’ll write up and email over your personal report. This will include full details of your session and the device configuration that best suits your needs.
If you’re happy with the recommendation we will send you a formal quote.

4. Place Your Order
Once you are happy, and we’ve answered all your questions you can accept our quote online, by email, or by phone, and we’ll get things in motion!
